Spotlight on Hazard Mitigation and Flood Protection

FEMA

New Shoreham is vulnerable to many hazards, including hurricanes, thunderstorms, high winds, winter realted hazards, flood related hazards and coastal erosion, among others

The Block Island Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted by the Town Council on July 5, 2017 and approved by FEMA on July 27, 2017. We welcome members of the community to read the plan, available through the link above or printed copy at Town Hall or the Library.

Links below provide additional information on hazard mitigation and flood protection.

The Town has applied to participate in the The National Flood Insurance Program's (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) Program, a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed minimum NFIP requirements. Should the Town be accepted into the program, property owners will be eligible to receive reduced flood insurance rates.
